My Wife, My Helper
“Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” So the LORD God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”
Genesis 2:18-24 NLT
Marriage is such a beautiful gift from God. It teaches and stretches both a man and his wife in unfathomable ways. Most of us lose sight of the fact that our spouses serve as a mirror- a very direct reflection of the core of our being or very nature. The individuals God strategically places in our lives or paths also help us learn on a deeper scale, our true character, whether selfish or pure. They serve as a guide to shape us into the very best we can be wherever we find ourselves. We can look up to such people as somewhat guardian angels or agents of the Holy Spirit for the key roles they play in our lives, which we cannot take lightly to say the least. I will use this post as a personal testament on my experiences leading up to marriage and how influential my wife has been since she came into my life.
I met my wife at a time when my life was at a crossroad, and I had no clue or whatsoever the direction to steer my life. I was in between jobs and sought fervently to get my life in order spiritually, physically, and financially. I did not really have any desire to be in a relationship because I did not view my life to be in good standing. In my mind, I had to figure it all out before I could take our friendship to the next level. In one of my first real interactions with my wife, one thing that I really found attractive about her other than her very beautiful appearance and humble spirit was her entrepreneurial drive and passion to chase after and realize her dreams. It served as a eureka moment for me, as I quietly thought about how I could build a Holy Spirit-inspired empire with her (business ideas led by our Helper). I felt this indescribable peace in my heart concerning taking our relationship to next level and every now and then I reflect on how glad I am that I made that decision.
The first few months of our relationship were not exactly the easiest because my troubles became her burden and hers became mine. The job search struggles continued from summer to November of 2014, and we lived in different states- New York and Massachusetts (next to each other, I know!). I took on a couple of gigs in Boston, MA and back home in Nanuet, NY during that span but those were far from what we had been praying and hoping for. The situation was frustrating and I would share my problems with her but that only killed the positive momentum.
The applications were still being placed daily and soon I got a job at one of the top banks. My wife was supportive through it all. As the months rolled by, the job got tougher and tougher as all my managers cared about was sales, sales, and more sales! It was the only measure of performance and if it meant going to businesses at the mall and other organizations just to open new accounts, then so it was. I always put in my best on the job and just when it got a little unbearable, I was convicted by the Holy Spirit to relocate to my wife’s city so I got a new job with another top bank. We saved towards our wedding and future throughout this period. Finally, our relationship was more enjoyable because we lived in the same city and life was generally going well.
My wife has been an amazing best friend to me from day one. We have shared happy and sad times together and we always do everything together, from planning our wedding to saving and making key decisions together. We have times when we do not see eye-to-eye just like with any other couple, but we have so much love and respect for each other. God and prayer have always been in the center of our union. We share ideas pertaining to life, business, spiritual growth, making a difference in the lives of others and society as a whole, the list goes on. We had melting moments during the latter stages of wedding planning because the process became so arduous. The turning point for us was when we had a very long conversation about our challenges, and absolutely committed everything to God in prayer. The pressure died down tremendously and God was very faithful, as He made everything fall in place beautifully. Prayer truly works! If you find yourself at crossroads as was the case for me, simply place God, prayer and faith first in your life and you would see Him move mightily.
One thing I constantly do is to let my wife know how much I love and appreciate her by telling her these beautiful words: “You are the best thing that ever happened to me!” It serves as a very meaningful reminder and reassurance not just to her but to me as well. I sincerely thank God for her life and for bringing her my way everyday. There are moments in which we step on each other’s toes, but those do not even last because of how much value we place on one another. It is my ultimate goal to use prayer and sow seeds of love in our marriage every blessed day because it will go a long way to serve both of us in our quest to be a living example and true source of inspiration to others.
To my beautiful wife and helper Cynthia Akita, words cannot even express how much I love you. Thank you for being there for me through it all. You are truly the BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME! May the Good Lord bless you beyond measure and realize all your dreams and aspirations. I will always be your NUMBER ONE FAN. I LOVE YOU!
God loves you all!
