4 Things to Focus on while SINGLE

Being single is a beautiful stage of life if you utilize it your advantage. Many view being single as a bad thing, but it’s the greatest period of time you can have to worry about nothing outside of yourself. Once you get married, all of that changes, you no longer have the free time or space to do just anything. You will no longer belong to your own self, but to your spouse and vice versa, so it’s important to take advantage of the time while you still can.

“What are four things you should focus on while you are still single?”

WORK ON YOURSELF! It’s so very important that you take time to do an assessment of yourself. What do you love about yourself? What do you dislike? What do you have the power to change or work on?

We all have things that we can change about ourselves. Think about the fruits of the spirit, if you can’t think of anything else. The fruits of the spirit are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control(Galatians 5:22-23). If you don’t have any of these traits or need to work on them, know that you will need every single bit of them in your relationship, and more importantly, during marriage.

Take time to recover from any hurt/pain you feel from past relationships and diminish any feuds that you may have within your family. If you stopped talking to your mother for any reason, work on that relationship. It won’t feel good to get married and not have her by your side to witness such an important day. Something you may not realize is that having such a feud will tend to show up in your relationship through your emotions and actions. Don’t allow the anger you have for someone else keep you from forming a lasting relationship with your future husband. Fix the problem or at least take steps to work toward a clean slate.

WORK ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD! God should be your biggest priority in life. If you have not formed the relationship that is necessary with God, then your focus should not be to get a man. Get God first because he’ll bring everything else in your life to a successful end. The bible says in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” You can’t go outside of God and then expect him to bless you and direct the rest of your path. We all tend to do that, where we make a decision and then ask God to take control in a decision we never consulted him about. Instead, we should always ask God first if what we want is also what He wants for us. Get closer to God and let your mental voice be His Spirit guiding and directing you.

WORK ON YOUR DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS! Your dreams and aspirations determine how you make a living as well as how you’ll take care of yourself and your future family. Make sure that you go to school or start that business, blog or organization. If you can’t go to sleep without thinking about it or wake up every morning with it on your mind, then I can guarantee that that particular thing is what you are meant to do. Build yourself. Learn the skills required to make it a successful dream and start it right away. You don’t want to live your life thinking, “I wish I had done that,” or “where would I be right now if I had started years ago?” Put in the most work while you are still young and don’t have too many responsibilities.

WORK ON YOUR FINANCES! The best time to save your money is when you don’t have to worry too much about bills, date night, birthday gifts, anniversary gifts and other things of that sort. Always make it a point to steadily save chunks of money at a time. Always remember to pay your tithes, but create a budget and list all of the bills you are required to pay, and then see what you have left over. Focus less on keeping up appearances with your friends and coworkers(going out to eat at restaurants) and focus more on creating a safety net for yourself. Anything can happen, and so saving money can help you in the future with marriage plans, renting an apartment or purchasing a home, buying or financing a car, and even more.

God loves you.
